11th Annual Trashcan Triathlon, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii July 11, 1999
On the local sports scene it was nice to have a much more casual
weekend after the past few weeks of madness. Here in Kona our main event was the
11th Annual Trashcan Triathlon. The main purpose of the Trashcan is to give our
local athletes a dress rehearsal or substitute for this weekend's Tinman triathlon on
Oahu.
The race started off with a half-mile swim in Kailua Bay. Relay swimmers dominated that segment as Steve McElrath led from start to finish and crossed the line in 12:59. Louis De La Torre at 13:47 and Peaman at 13:52 made up the chase pack.
For the individuals, Jon Allan led the way at 14:34 with a pack of 10 almost two minutes back. Ladies leader Paloma Vidgen was part of that pack, and she exited the water in 16:21.
During the 16-mile bike ride, veteran cyclist Steve Crane blazed his way into the lead. By the time he reached the bike-to-run transition he had built up a margin of 2:44 over Harry "The Hammer" Yoshida who was off the bike in second. Dard "Vader" Aller, last year's winner, was another five seconds back with Bobby Root and Jahloha still chasing a couple more minutes back.
For the ladies, Ysabel Thomas rode her way to the front with Lora
Aller and Pam Foster still in the hunt.
Out on the three-mile run course, Crane looked to be in control but Yoshida and Jahloha were closing in. Fortunately for Crane they ran out of time and distance as he crossed the line in first at 1:18:15. His time fell just short of Kelly Beck's 1995 record of 1:18:02,
Yoshida hung on for second at 1:20:01. Jahloha followed in third at 1:20:48; fourth went to Vader-Aller at 1:21:01, and Root closed out the top five in 1:23:02.
In the ladies race Thomas extended her lead during the run and made her way across the finish in 1:36:04. Lora Aller held on for second at 1:46:41.
Third went to Alison Lowen, who was very close behind, in 1:46:48. Lowen's run time of 26:58 was the day's fastest time for the ladies. Pam Foster took fourth in 1:47:13. Jeanette Vidgen wrapped up fifth in 1:49:45.
The finned race was dominated by Clay Bringman and Simmy McMichael. They clocked in at 1:31:29 and 1:43:44.
In the relay competition Sean P. Kelley, Karen Davis and Jon Kunitake teamed up for the win and a new mixed team record time of 1:27:19. They bettered the mark of 1:28:06 set by Peaman, Mouse and Leonardo Fraga just last year. This year, the Peaster teamed up with Iron Lung Davis to take second and also break the record with their time of 1:27:31.
Tom "Cat" Sena, Scott Sharp and Antonita Sena followed in third at 1:32:36.
Libby Kinkead, Lisa Rader and Deborah Griffy took the ladies team title with their time of 1:38:07.
The finned relay champs were Colt Bringman and Lenny "Silver Fox" Katz.
They combined for a new record time of 1:24:59. The Silver Fox also was part of the mixed team record set in 1996.
Just like the minor leagues in baseball, the Trashcan was a perfect way for everyone to prepare for this weekend's King Swim and the 19th Annual Tinmam Triathlon.
